Your Business Needs A Full Tank Of Gas

I LOVE a good metaphor and since gas prices are at the front of everyone’s mind, let’s take a drive.

Ads are the acceleration to your business, they are not the gas.

If your business is a car, it already needs a full tank of gas in order for paid ads to be successful. Plain and simple, paid ads are the acceleration, taking you from 30MPH to 60MPH - they are NOT the gas making the car go.

You are responsible for keeping your car with a full tank of premium gas at all times.

No matter how much you push down on the acceleration, your car will not run on an empty tank of gas. I should also mention that your gas tank needs to remain full in order for paid ads to be successful. If you let your gas tank get down to 3/4 of a tank - you can expect your paid advertising to 75% of what it normally would with a full tank.

What does a full tank of gas mean for your business?

  • Content. A LOT of content.

  • How often do you want to sell on social media? Daily? Hourly? Does that align with how often you’re posting on social media?

  • Let’s clear something up: you cannot post too often on social media. Obviously be aware of what Facebook considers spam, but you get the idea. Not every single one of your followers on Facebook and Instagram are on at the same time and they will not all see each of your posts, EVEN if you post 5 times a day.

  • The exciting part is that you don’t always have to post something for sale and you don’t always have to put on makeup! You are MOST relatable straight out of bed, coffee in hand, hot mess express. I PINKY PROMISE.

What does a full tank of premium gas mean for your business?

  • Quality content, which I realize is subjective, but quality means a few things:

    • Product descriptions that answer: who, what, when, where, why and how. More info here.

    • A clean mirror for selfies

    • Using your STORY!

    • Engaging captions

      • Example: LIVING for this dress, but having a hard time deciding where to wear it! Do y’all think it gives more date night or Sunday Funday vibes?

    • Asking questions without asking questions

      • Example: Going on a date tonight! Haven’t swiped in months, so taking a chance on this one! Hope he likes my dress and hope I like him! ;)

    • Using a call to action on sale posts

      • Example: Babes we have the cutest new dress that just dropped! She’s called the Danielle Dress and you can search for her in our app! Don’t have the app? OMG don’t worry - I’ve got you xoxo Download for iOS: bitly link // Download for Android: bitly link

    • Posting collages vs groups of photos

      • If you want to post 2 side by side pics, put them in a collage so they post as one, they will perform much better this way

      • If you have multiple pics you want to post - your customer is not going to scroll through them, so you might as well post individually or in a collage

I know - gas is expensive. Literally and in this amazing metaphor. Putting gas in your business tank is a lot of freaking work. It’s draining and it can feel like you’re wasting time because it’s not doing anything. It feels that way every time I fill up my giant SUV, I put in my card, the gas goes in, I know the car needs it, but I don’t see it in action, nor can I explain it.

The same is with your business - you post on social media, you don’t see the effects of the post and you can’t explain it, but it still gets you where you want to go. Just because a post doesn’t get likes or comments, doesn’t mean it’s not effective.

Here’s a challenge for you: instead of measuring likes and comments, measure the reach. You don’t measure the miles per gallon you got every single mile you drive, right? No you just drive and reach your destination knowing the gas got you there.

Just to reiterate - the car WILL NOT GO without gas, no matter how hard you push on the pedal. You are responsible for keeping it at a full tank.

You are welcome to swap gas for electricity if you have an electric car - you need a full charge. 😎
